MENAI

Menai is a predominantly residential area having recent growthi. Menai is bounded by the suburb of Alfords Point, Old Illawarra Road and the suburbs of Illawarra and Bangor in the east, Barden Road and the suburb of Barden Ridge in the south. Menai is named after the Menai Straits between the Welsh mainland and the Isle of Anglesey. It was originally known as Bangor.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1840s. Significant development did not occur until the late 1970s in Menai. Rapid growth took place during the 1990s, with the population doubling between 1991 and 2001. The population was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, a result of little change in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Major features of the area include Menai Marketplace Shopping Centre, Menai Metro Shopping Centre, Sandy Point Community Centre, Illawarra Mini Bike & Mini Cycle Training Club, Hall Drive Bushland Reserve, Menai Park and a number of schools.
