Gymea is an established residential area, with a commercial area around the railway station. Gymea is bounded by the Princes Highway and Garnet Road in the north, Sylvania Road and Sylvania Road South in the east, Forest Road in the south and North West Arm Road, Hotham Road, Jowyn Place and Durbar Avenue in the west. Gymea is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning “a giant lily”.

Development of the area dates primarily from the post-war years. Prior to development the area was densely timbered. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.

Major features of the area include TAFE NSW Sydney Institute - Sutherland College (Gymea Campus) and a number of schools.
