Caringbah is an established residential area, with industrial use in the northern section, and some commercial areas. Caringbah is bounded generally by Bay Road in the north, Woolooware Bay, Gannons Road North and Kingsway in the east, Oleander Parade, Caringbah Road, Vista Street and President Avenue in the south and Kareena Road South, Kumulla Road and Taren Point Road in the west. Caringbah is named from an Aboriginal word meaning “pademelon wallaby”. It was previously known as Highfield.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s when crown land was released. Early land uses included poultry farming, fruit growing and market gardening. Residential development took place from the late 1930s, becoming significant from the 1950s. The population has increased slightly since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.

Major features of the area include Sutherland Hospital, Carringbah Shopping Village, Kingsway Mall Shopping Centre, Supa Centa Shopping Centre, Caringbah Leisure Centre, De La Salle College and a number of other schools.
