Bangor is an established residential area, with parklands and waterways. Bangor is bounded by Still Creek in the north, the Woronora River in the east, the suburb of Woronora and the Woronora River in the south and the suburb of Barden Ridge, Dilkara Circuit, Ebony Row, Aquinas College, Beltana Close and the suburb of Menai in the west. Bangor is named after the City of Bangor in the Menai Strait of Wales.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for orchards and poultry farming. Significant development did not occur until the mid 1970s, with rapid growth in the late 1970s and 1980s. The population increased marginally during the 1990s, and then was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, a result of some new dwellings being added, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Major features of the area include Bangor Shopping Centre, Billa Road Reserve, Akuna Avenue Oval and two schools.
